THE PROBLEM

Three reasons a blank alt field keeps costing you

SEO and AEO: Without SEO-friendly alt text, search engines can't read your images, so they stay out of Google Image Search no matter how strong the rest of your SEO is. AI answer engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity rely on alt text too. No description means your images are invisible to them.

Accessibility: For people using screen readers, an image with no alt text is just a blank. Alt text is how you make your content usable for everyone, and it's what WCAG 2.1 AA, the ADA, and the EAA require.

The workflow gap: You're not always inside a CMS with a plugin. You're writing a post, working in a platform with no integration, or fixing an image on a page you don't own. Writing good alt text by hand mid-task breaks your flow, so it gets rushed or skipped.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

Faster than writing it yourself, smarter than generic AI

Generic tools see pixels. AltTextLab reads the page around the image and writes alt text a human would actually use.

Works on any website

Any page, any CMS, any platform. If you can open it in Chrome, you can generate alt text on it.

Context-aware descriptions

The extension reads the page's keywords, not just the image, so descriptions fit the page instead of guessing in isolation.

130+ languages

Generate accessible, localized image alt text in any of 130+ languages, ideal for multilingual content and global teams.

Privacy-first and GDPR-aligned

Images are processed and immediately discarded. Fully GDPR-aligned and compliant.

WCAG 2.1 AA compliant output

Every description meets screen reader standards: useful length, natural language, meaningful context. Aligned with the ADA, EAA, and Section 508.

Four writing styles

Choose descriptive, neutral, matter-of-fact, or minimal to match the tone of the page you're working on.

I tried a few others plugins before I found this one. The others were either too complicated or too expensive. This plugin was simple to use and install and worked immediately. The alt tags it generates are perfect. Very descriptive and accurate.

I manage several client sites and this plugin saves me a lot of time. I install it, set it up once, and it works in the background. It’s part of my standard setup now.

Does the Chrome Extension automatically apply alt text to my images, or do I have to paste it manually?

No. The Chrome extension generates alt text and copies it for you to paste wherever you need it. If you want alt text written into your site automatically and in bulk, the Web Snippet or a platform-specific plugin is the better fit. The extension is best for quick, one-off descriptions and for pages where you don't have a native integration.

Is this Chrome browser extension free?

Yes. Every AltTextLab account includes 25 image credits every month on the free plan, with no credit card required. The extension uses those credits, so you can start generating alt text right after you install it and add your API key.

Does the AltTextLab extension work on any website?

Yes. It works on any public web page, in any CMS or platform, as long as the image is publicly accessible. Password-protected or login-gated images can't be processed.

What permissions does the extension require and why?

The extension requests access to read the images on the pages you visit in order to analyze them and generate alternative text. It does not record your browsing history, read your keystrokes, access your personal data, or transmit anything beyond the specific image you right-click and request generation for. Image data is sent to AltTextLab's servers for analysis and is not stored or used to train AI models.
