Install from Chrome Web Store

Open the AltTextLab page on Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome.

Open extension options

Click the AltTextLab icon in your browser toolbar and go to Options.

Enter your API key

Paste your API key (from dashboard settings) and click Save. This step is only needed for AI generation — skip it if you only want to show existing alt text on pages.

Getting started

The extension has two independent features: showing existing alt text on a page works immediately, while generating new alt text with AI requires the API key from step 3 above.

Open the popup

Click the AltTextLab icon in your browser toolbar.

Turn on Show alt text

Switch on Show alt text on this page to reveal the alt text of every image on the active tab. Toggle it off to hide the overlay again.
This works on any page right after installation — no sign-up or API key needed.

Generating alt text with AI

Right-click any image on a public web page and select AltTextLab: Get alt text. The result appears in a popup within seconds with a one-click copy button. This requires an API key — see step 3 in Installation above.

These settings apply to AI generation.

Requirements & limitations

Showing alt text works on any page and doesn’t require an account. Generating new alt text requires an API key, and images must be publicly accessible — password-protected or login-gated images cannot be processed. For error messages, see Troubleshooting.
