Automatic generation

When you upload a new image to your media library, the plugin generates alt text immediately using your current settings. No extra steps required. You can disable this behaviour in AltTextLab → Settings by turning off Generate alt text automatically for new uploads.

Bulk processing

For images already in your library, two bulk options are available:

Full library scan

Go to AltTextLab → Bulk Generate and click Generate Alt Text. Before starting, you can configure the scan using the following options:
OptionDescription
Include images that already have alt textOverwrites existing alt text for all processed images.
Only process images that are attached to postsSkips images that exist in the media library but are not attached to any post or page.
Skip images already processed by AltTextLabSkips images that were previously processed by the plugin, even if their alt text was later changed.
The plugin shows a preview of how many images will be processed before you start.

Selective processing

To generate alt text for a specific group of items:
  1. Go to the screen for the content type you want to process.
  2. Select the items using the checkboxes.
  3. Open the Bulk actions dropdown and choose Generate alt text.
  4. Click Apply.
Available screens:
  • Media Library — processes the selected images directly
  • Posts or Pages — processes all images attached to the selected posts or pages
  • WooCommerce products — processes the featured image and gallery images of the selected products

Sync alt text from media library to content

Bulk generation saves alt text to images in the media library. However, WordPress does not automatically apply those changes to images already embedded in posts or pages — alt text is written directly into the post content at the time an image is inserted, and is not linked to the media library afterwards. The sync tool finds all images embedded in your posts and pages and updates their alt text to match the current value in the media library. To sync all content at once, go to AltTextLab → Sync alt text in content and click Sync alt text. You can also sync selectively. Go to any of the screens below, select the items you want to update, open the Bulk actions dropdown, and choose Sync alt text:
  • Media Library — syncs alt text for the selected images across all content
  • Posts or Pages — syncs alt text for all images embedded in the selected posts or pages
  • WooCommerce products — syncs alt text for images embedded in the selected product descriptions
Use this tool after bulk generation. You do not need it after automatic generation on upload — in that case, alt text is generated before the image is inserted into the post, so the content already contains the correct value.
